IWD '24: Our advice for young women starting their careers

What advice would you give to young women starting their careers?

For International Women’s Day and National Careers Week, we asked some of team Reckless’ incredible women what advice they would give to young women starting out in their career.

Lindsay Reckless, Chief People Officer

“The biggest thing is to realise that careers aren’t going to be perfect. They’re a bit like dating; you might have to kiss a few frogs to start with, but this is what makes you stronger and appreciate, when you do get into the good job, how good you’ve got it. If you can be resilient, agile and adaptable, especially in marketing, you’ll fly.”

Hannah Worsley, Senior Project Manager

“Don’t get caught up in the rat race. You don’t need to have your career defined straight out of uni. What you love doing at 18 you might not love doing when you’re 40, and that’s OK. Things change, and remember to prioritise a good work-life balance to live a happy life”.

Sian Dalzell, Studio Coordinator

“Don’t be distracted by what others are doing. It can be easy to feel like your failing when you compare yourself to other people, especially with such powerful social media marketing available these days. Your journey is exactly that – it’s yours. So stay focused on what your trying to achieve and the goals you set yourself, however small they are to begin with, and celebrate the success when you hit them. Also have fun! Life’s hard enough so make sure you enjoy as much as you can. If it’s not fun and you don’t enjoy your job, is it even worth it?”

Yasmin Rowlands, Social Media Executive

“If you don’t get the job you applied for, don’t worry about it. Other opportunities will come along, and you will find the perfect job that’s right for you and it’ll be way better than the first”.

Leanne Bates, Marketing Manager

“If you suffer from imposter syndrome and think you’re not good enough to do a job just remember that you are, and everybody else is in the same boat, everybody feels the same way. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed with workloads and if you need it, ask for help. Employers would prefer you to ask questions than just sit their struggling.”

Lauren Simmons, Content Strategist

“Don’t be afraid of not knowing something, you can’t be an expert at absolutely everything. You should view not knowing something as an opportunity to learn, and progress, and get yourself out of your comfort zone”.
